음악가 게이브는 무용수인 연인 블레어와 함께 브루클린을 떠나 아디론닥 산속 외딴 호수 옆 오두막으로 이사한다.
그리고 엄마가 물려준 오두막을 개조해 휴식과 영화 촬영이 필요한 사람에게 임대한다.
한편, 슬럼프에 빠진 영화감독 앨리슨은 새로운 창조적 영감을 얻기 위해 조용한 게이브의 오두막으로 홀로 떠난다.
게이브와 임신한 블레어는 더 이상 아무도 오지 않는 그곳에서 낯선 앨리슨을 호기심을 가지고 환영한다.
그 후 앨리슨은 게이브, 블레어와 함께 식사하고 대화하면서 의도적으로 거짓말하고 게이브 편을 들면서 블레어의 질투심을 유발한다.
그날 밤, 블레어는 앨리슨과 게이브의 밀애를 목격한 뒤 충격과 분노로 피를 흘리며 쓰러진다.
게이브와 블레어를 태우고 급히 병원으로 차를 몰던 앨리슨은 교통사고를 일으키고 정신을 잃게 되는데...
