성공한 연극배우 마리안느는 역시 성공한 지휘자 마쿠스와 결혼해 아홉살 난 딸을 두고 멀쩡하게 살고 있다. 남편의 친구인 영화감독 데이비드는 이 기름진 가족 모두의 친구이기도 하다. 다정다감하지만 딜레탕트의 냄새가 짙은 데이비드는 남자가 출장간 사이 마리안느를 찾아와 어깨를 기댄다. 친구였던 두 남녀는 곧 제동장치 없는 불륜 게임을 시작하고, 한때 친구였던 세 사람은 서로에게 부정(不貞)해지면서 모두 자멸하고 만다.

Five conversations frame a flawed marriage in this film written by Ingmar Bergman about his parents. Guilt-ridden wife Anna (Pernilla August) divulges an extramarital affair to a priest, her uncle Jacob (Max von Sydow). He presses her to confess her sins to her husband, Henrik. As the film moves back and forth in time, the notion of truth is tested. Tomas, the lover, and Henrik will find that Anna's confessions do not absolve anyone, and have the power to inflict more pain.

작가로써 명성을 날리던 알렉산더는 지금은 시골 마을에서 살고 있다. 그의 어린 아들은 실어증에 걸렸다. 알렉산더는 자신의 생일날 아침 아들 고센과 산책나가 죽은 나무에 정성스럽게도 정성을 다해 물을 주면 꽃을 피울 수 있다는 전설을 들려주며 죽은 나무를 바닷가에 심는다. 알렉산더의 생일을 축하하기 위해 사람들이 모이지만 그날 제3차 세계 대전이 현실로 다가와 모두를 공포에 떨게 한다. 그는 세상을 구하고자 기도를 하는데 우체부인 오토가 알렉산더에게 그의 집 가정부인 마리아와 동침을 하면 세상을 구원할 수 있다고 말한다.
