밀라와 하비어는 둘 다 실력 있는 심장외과 의사로 같은 병원에서 근무하는 부부이다. 결혼 10년 차임에도 그들은 여전히 열렬히 사랑하며 음주 가무를 즐기며 가끔은 철부지 같은 일탈을 즐기며 산다. 하지만, 하비어는 술이 문제다. 그런 음주 문제로 인해 수술에서 제외되며 정직기를 보내게 된 하비어. 그리고 생각지도 못한 임신을 알게 된 밀라. 둘만의 자유와 행복을 원하며, 아이로 인해 제약받는 삶을 두려워했던 밀라는 낙태를 생각한다. 하지만, 아이를 원하는 하비어의 뜻을 받아들여 아이를 낳기로 하고 변화를 위해 남미로 가려던 계획도 뒤로 미루게 된다. 시간이 갈수록 하비어의 술버릇이 판단의 중심을 갉아먹으며 점점 질투심이 많고 소유욕이 강하고 무책임한 생각을 하게 된다. 그러면서 밀라, 하비어 이 둘은 혼돈의 시간을 보낸다. 어느 날 사라진 하비어. 그를 찾아 나선 밀라. 밀라는 넘어져 머리를 다치고 병원으로 옮겨지게 되고, 제왕절개로 아이를 무사히 낳게 되지만, 정작 밀라 본인은 의식 없이 병실에 누워있는다. 이때 그녀를 찾아온 하비어는 절규한다.
