어린이 TV쇼를 진행하며 잘 나가던 루돌프는 쇼에 출연하는 한 아이의 부모로부터 뇌물을 받은 비리 혐의로 현장에서 FBI에게 붙잡히게 되고 방송계에서도 축출된다. 랜돌프를 대신할 어린이 쇼의 진행자를 찾고 있던 방송국의 톱 제작자 노라는 우연히 쉘든 몹스를 알게 되고 스무치라는 새로운 캐릭터를 만들어 TV 프로그램에서 출연시키고 아이들에게 선풍적인 인기를 끌게 된다. 한편, 모든 것을 잃은 랜돌프는 후임으로 온 스무치가 자신의 전 애인이자 방송국의 톱 제작자인 노라와 연인관계임을 발견하게 되고 자신의 모든 것을 빼앗아간 스무치에게 복수를 맹세한다.

Superstar Luciano Pavarotti heads the cast as the Muslim warrior prince Oronte who converts to Christianity out of love for the Italian Giselda (Lauren Flanigan)—before dying of the wounds he received in battling the Crusaders. Samuel Ramey is the Crusader-turned-hermit Pagano. Mark Lamos’s striking production has sets by John Conklin and costumes by Dunya Ramicova.
