마이어는 2009년 사망할 때까지 외부에 자신의 사진을 공개하지 않은 미스터리한 인물이었다. 영화는 2007년 부동산 중개인이자 아티스트인 존 말루프가 옥션 경매에서 400달러를 주고 인화되지 않은 마이어의 필름통이 담긴 박스를 우연히 구입한 경위에서부터, 이를 현상, 인화하여 보급하는 과정을 따라간다. 이 영화의 감독이기도 한 존 말루프의 노력에 의해 음지에 묻힐 뻔했던 주옥편들이 뉴욕, 시카고, 유럽을 통해 전파되었다. 마이어의 사진을 외부에 알리는 과정과 함께 존 말루프는 사물과 인간의 심부를 꿰뚫는 심미안의 비밀을 캐기 위해 그녀의 생애를 더듬는다.
