암으로 고생하시던 아빠는 가족만 남겨두고 자살을 하고 남은 밀리 가족은 이사를 온다. 아빠가 돌아가신 뒤 밀리와 동생 루이스, 그리고 엄마, 다들 힘겹게 살아간다. 옆집에 사는 에릭은 술주정뱅이 삼촌과 살고 있으며, 부모님이 비행기 사고로 돌아가신 뒤 새처럼 나는 흉내를 내는 자폐증 증세가 있는 소년이다. 같은 반이 된 밀리는 선생님의 부탁으로 에릭을 돕는다. 처음엔 이상하게만 보이던 에릭과 같이 날게 되자, 밀리는 에릭과 서서히 가까워지게 된다. 한편 주정뱅이 삼촌 때문에 복지 시설로 가게 된 에릭은 탈출을 하고, 복지 시설 사람들에게 쫓기자 밀리와 함께 새처럼 난다. 이 모습을 본 사람들은 감탄을 자아내고, 에릭은 사라지고 만다. 에릭을 통해 믿음만 가지면 뭐든 이룰 수 있다는 걸 알게 된 밀리 가족들은 서로에게 믿음을 갖게 되고 새 행복을 찾는다.
