황량하고 메마른 섬에 자리한 하야트의 마을에는 집집마다 딸을 한 명씩 바다에 바쳐야 하는 오랜 관습이 있다. 바다에 딸을 바치는 대신, 마을 남자들이 바다 생명체들을 사냥해 생계를 이어가는 것이다. 아버지 덕분에 아기일 때 제물이 될 운명을 피한 하야트는 마을 안에서 저주처럼 여겨지며 따돌림을 받는다. 굳센 의지를 가진 하야트는 그에 굴하지 않고 자신의 자리를 찾고자 하지만, 남동생이 태어나면서 다시 잔혹한 관습에 희생될 위기에 처한다.
