케이트는 매사에 활발하고 생기있는 평범한 가정주부. 교수로 재직중인 조지의 아내다. 평온한 생활 속에서 행복하게 살아가던 케이트에게 어느 날 엄청난 일이 생긴다. 몸에 악성종양이 자라고 있는 것. 남편은 뉴욕에서 생활하던 딸 엘렌을 불러 케이트의 간호를 부탁한다. 어머니의 투병생활을 도우면서 엘렌은 지극히 평험하게 살아온 케이트의 삶을 되돌아본다. 그리고 대수롭지 않게 여겼던 가정 생활에서 어머니가 차지했던 자리와 아름다운 면들을 재발견한다. 엘렌은 자신의 부모 역시 다른 사람과 마찬가지로 많은 단점을 가지고 있음을 인정하게 되고 그들을 진심으로 이해하게 된다.
