To the great displeasure of Jo, thirteen-year-old Tom is as good at math as he is useless on the rugby field. 마리는 프랑스 프로방스 지방에 사는 문학 평론가다. 어느 날 마리에게 이상한 일이 일어난다. 마리가 잠에서 깨어나면 뉴욕의 성공한 출판업자 마티가 돼 있는 것이다. 뉴욕에서 바쁜 하루를 보낸 마티가 잠자리에 들어 깨어날 즈음엔 다시 마리가 되어서 프랑스에서 아침을 맞는다. 이게 상식에 맞는 얘기라면 둘 중 하나는 분명히 꿈이어야 한다. 그러나 양쪽 다 생생한 현실감을 가지고 있기에 대체 뭐가 꿈이고 뭐가 생시인지 알 수 없고 마리/마티(데미 무어)는 이중생활을 이어간다.
