세계 최고의 산악인 로이스는 어느날 아들 피터(크리스 오도넬 분)와 딸 애니(로빈 튜니 분), 그리고 자신의 대원들과 함께 암벽 등반을 즐긴다. 깎아지른 절벽에서 정상을 향한 모험을 즐기던 이들은 한 대원의 실수로 팀 모두가 가장 아래쪽에 있던 애니의 자일에 매달리게 된다. 결국 대원들은 끝이 보이지 않는 절벽 아래로 떨어져 버리고 마지막으로 피터, 로이스, 그리고 애니만이 자일 하나에 몸을 지탱하게 된다. 자일 하나로는 세 명이 지탱할 수 없다는 사실을 알고 있던 로이스는 침착한 어조로 피터에게 자신에게 묶인 자일을 자르라고 강요한다. 삶과 죽음을 결정짓는 찰나의 순간. 동생 애니의 만류하는 비명 속에 피터는 떨리는 손으로 칼을 든다. 3년 후. 부유한 사업가인 엘리엇(빌 팩스턴 분)은 자신의 항공사의 이벤트를 위해 세계에서 가장 어렵다는 등반 코스인 K2 등정을 계획한다. 사고 이후로 산을 버린 채 은둔한 사진작가로 살고 있는 피터는 다큐멘터리 방송 팀으로 등반대에 합류하게 된 애니와 만나게 된다. 껄끄러운 남매의 상봉도 잠시, 애니는 등정을 만류하는 피터를 차갑게 외면한다. 정복 날짜를 정하고 등반하는 무모한 일정을 비난하는 산악 전문가 몽고메리 윅(스콧 글랜 분)은 일행을 비난하지만 계획대로 다음날 등반은 시작된다. 그리고 오랜만에 나타난 먹이를 놓치지 않으려는 듯 K2는 평온한 모습으로 이들을 맞이하는데, 곧 산의 분노가 시작된다.
