이발사 에드는 권태로운 일상을 보내고 있다. 아내 도리스는 상사인 데이브와 바람이 났지만 에드는 알고도 모른 척이다. 마침 이발하러 온 손님이 드라이 크리닝 기계로 돈을 벌 수 있다고 제안한다. 에드는 마음이 동해 투자금을 확보하기 위해 데이브를 협박하는데 엉겁결에 펜촉으로 그를 찔러 죽이고 만다. 엉뚱하게도 아내 도리스가 살인 혐의로 체포되고 일은 꼬일 대로 꼬여 간다.
