British academics Loretta and Bridget run into Sandra, an old school friend at a book launch. 1980년 결성된 폴란드의 자유노조 운동은 1981년에 들어서면서 전국적인 조직으로 확산되기 시작했다. 비밀 경찰 요원인 스테판은 노조 운동의 확산을 막기위해 요주의 인물 중의 하나인 알렉 신부의 조사를 맡게된다. 신부를 조사하는 동안 스테판은 알 수 없는 힘에 이끌려 서서히 그의 매력에 빠지게 되는 자신을 발견한다. 하지만 스테판은 이를 인정하려 하지 않는다. 한편 아내와 아들 미렉이 사람들로부터 따돌림을 당하게 되자 스테판은 이러한 심리상태의 표적을 신부로 정하여 그에 대한 증오심을 불태운다. 스테판은 직속 상관인 대령의 소개로 상부관리의 눈에 들어 신부를 마음대로 해도 좋다는 것을 받아낸다. 신부를 체포하려는 여러번의 시도에 실패한 그는 지방에 설교하러 가는 신부를 살해할 계획을 세운다. 하지만 신부에 대한 애증의 마음을 갖고 있는 스테판은 신부를 살해하기 전날 밤 인간적인 고뇌를 겪으며 마침내 신부에게 지방에 설교하러 가지 말라는 전화를 한다. 전화를 받은 신부 또한 고민을 하지만 강직한 성품을 가진 그는 주의의 만류에도 불구하고 설교를 강행하여 끝내 스테판의 손에 살해되고 만다. 신부가 살해되었다는 소식은 전국에 퍼지고 이 사건은 폴란드 자유노조 운동에 더 큰 불씨를 던지는 결과를 낳게 된다. 결국 공산 체제를 유지하려고 노력했던 폴란드의 비밀 경찰 요원인 스테판은 자유를 갈망하는 시민들의 강한 항의와 투쟁으로 인하여 처벌받게 되고, 국민들과 함께 한 알렉 신부의 정신은 길이 빛나게 되었다.
