In the early 70-ies during the war in the middle East, the plane of the Soviet military pilot Oleg Zorov was shot down. The officer was still alive but in an unconscious state was captured. After his recovery, the Americans granted him political asylum. Twenty years Zorov, who became Alex Fred Kelly, worked for the CIA. And now, years later, he returns home, where he left his sister and beloved woman…

The heroes of the film are students of a pedagogical university, those who, after a year or two, have to carry knowledge to schoolchildren, "to sow the rational, good, eternal." In the meantime, student practice. In November, 1942, near the Volga, Stanlingrad is under siege of Commander Friederich Paulus and his 330,000 men. The Russian high command unleashes an operation to protect the Mishkova River to avoid that about four hundred tanks join Paulus' army. The Soviet artillery soldiers protect their position with their lives in a bloodshed with few survivors.

In a remote village in Karelia, Sergeant Vaskov commands an anti-aircraft unit that protects a rail depot. While his men are transferred to the front line, he is reprimanded for their unruly behavior. He retorts that he wants replacements that aren't drunks or womanizers. In response, he is assigned a unit made up entirely of young women, fresh from training.

The main character of the film is an ordinary chauffeur Pavel, whose life is not very successful, despite the fact that he is a very kind and fair person. Finally, fate smiles at Pavel, he meets true love, but more and more tests fall to his lot, as if testing a simple guy for strength.

In September 1944, an unusual train travels to the Turkish border. Abroad the train are German fascists and Bulgarian King's officers who carry important papers and archives. A group of partisan chases the fugitives with a track. Soon airplanes with red stars on their wings could be seen in the sky. The planes are reinforcements from the Soviet aviation squadron. With its help the partisans capture the fugitives.
