목숨과도 같은 친구, 빅보이(우디 해럴슨 분)를 죽인 자에게 복수를 하기 위해 다시 하이 로 컨츄리로 돌아온 주인공. 피트(빌리 크루덥 분). 그의 회상과 함께 영화는 시작된다. 2차 대전에 참가하기 위해 마을을 떠났던 피트는 다시 고향에 돌아와 친구, 빅보이와 옛 애인, 미사(패트리샤 아퀘트 분)를 만난다. 늘 위세 당당하고 활기찼던 친구는 그대로지만 미사는 이미 결혼한 상태. 하지만 결혼생활에 만족하지 못했던 미사는 그를 유혹하고 피트는 그 유혹에 빠져들게 된다. 아름답고 착한 여자, 세파가 곁에 있음에도 불구하고. 두 여자 사이에서 피트가 방황하는 동안 이 마을에서는 많은 일들이 일어난다. 악덕업자가 빅보이와 함께 포카를 치던 중 많은 돈을 잃게되자 갑자기 혈압이 올라 죽었는가하면 마을 청년들끼리 의견대립으로 싸움이 일어난다. 늘 이런 일들이 일어나면 빅보이는 특유의 기질로 상황을 중재시키고 피트는 친구의 그런 모습을 보면서 위대함까지 느끼게 된다. 그러던 어느 날 미사가 빅보이와 사귀는 사실을 발견한다. 충격을 받은 피트. 하지만 피트는 둘의 우정에 금이 갈까봐 모든 일을 무마시키고 그 둘의 관계를 인정한다. 그러던 어느 날 씨다른 형제가 있던 빅보이가 그 동생과 다툼을 벌이던 중 총에 맞아 죽게 되는데.
