Three friends face mid-life crises. Paul is a writer who's blocked. François has lost his ideals and practices medicine for the money; his wife grows distant, even hostile. The charming Vincent, everyone's favorite, faces bankruptcy, his mistress leaves him, and his wife, from whom he's separated, wants a divorce. The strains on the men begin to show particularly in François and Paul's friendship and in Vincent's health. A younger man, Jack, becomes attractive to Lucie, François's wife. Another young friend, the boxer Jean, who's like a son to Vincent and whose girlfriend is pregnant, has taken a bout with a merciless slugger. Has happiness eluded this circle of friends?

The "Hamlet" in this well-mounted Italian spoof is the Danish prince, not a small town or village. The movie irreverently draws on both the Shakespeare play and the 1877 story by Jules Laforgue. In the story, Hamlet (Carmelo Bene) is a would-be playwright. He suffers from inept Freudian analysis by Polonius (Pippo Tuminelli), and Ophelia and Gertrude (Isabella Russo & Luciana Cante) are women conjured up in his erotic imagination.

In 1958 Angelo, a rich and spoiled boy, enters a religious school, where students are tired of its vice-rector, and the strict rules and old-fashioned teaching methods of priests. Soon, Angelo exerts strong leadership among his peers and incites turmoil among them, helped by intellectual Franco and shy Camma. They expel the prefect from the school, organize a Grand Guignol show, and disappear the corpse of an old professor.

After a fight in their apartment, the story of a writer and a painter are divided. The writer is dedicated with his partner Manon to provoke continuous accidents in a field in which car carcasses abound. The painter is recruited to kill, through a poisoned picture, the old Arden to allow the latter's wife, Alice to live with her lover Mosbie.

살인죄로 14년형을 선고받고 복역 중인 약혼녀 부베를 찾아가는 마라(Mara: 클라우디아 카르디날레 분)의 회상으로 영화는 시작된다. 마라는 이곳 저곳 옮겨 다녀야만 하는 부베(Bebo: 죠지 차키리스 분)와의 면회를 자그만치 14년째 계속하고 있으며 오직 그가 석방될 날만을 기다리고 있다. 마라가 부베를 처음 만난 것은 북부 이탈리아의 산중에 있는 가난한 빈촌에서 2차 세계대전이 끝날 무렵인 1944년 7월 한여름 마라의 집에 부베라는 청년이 찾아오게 되면서이다. 부베는 레지스탕스로 나치에게 처형된 오빠 산태의 동지로 산태의 전사를 전하러 왔던 것이다. 이들은 처음 본 순간 서로 이끌렸고 하룻밤을 마라의 집에서 묵은 부베는 전쟁에서 기념으로 가지고 온 낙하산 천으로 옷이나 만들어 입으라는 말을 남긴 뒤 떠난다. 그 후부터 부베의 편지가 끊이지 않았다. 그로부터 1년 후 겨울, 다시 찾아온 부베는 마라의 의사를 묻지도 않은 채 마라의 아버지(Mara's Father: 에밀리오 에스포지토 분)에게 약혼 승락을 받는다. 그리고 얼마 후 부베가 다시 찾아왔을 때 부베는 친구가 경찰에 사살되어 보복으로 경찰을 죽이고 쫓기는 신세였다. 그래서 이들은 본의 아니게 도피 행각을 하게 되는데 부베의 집에서의 냉대와 끈질긴 경찰의 추적으로 두 사람은 하는 수 없이 공장지대로 몸을 숨긴다. 국외로 탈출하려는 부베에게 처음으로 몸을 허락한 마라, 다시 부베는 기약없이 떠나고 마라는 한 청년을 알게 되지만 헤어진다. 1년만에 유고 정부로 부터 송환되어 재판을 받게된 부베에게 마라는 더 이상 인연을 끊으려고 재판장에 갔다가 부베가 아직도 사랑한다는 말에 포기하고 만다. 그리고 14년이라는 장기형을 선고받은 부베를 면회간 마라는 그의 아내가 될 것을 다짐하고 그때부터 부베가 나올 날만을 기다리며 주위의 온갖 유혹도 뿌리치고 부베의 연인으로 한 달에 두 번씩 그를 만나러 가는 그녀의 여행이 시작된다.

몰락해가는 가문 체파루 가문의 페르디난도 세팔루는 지루한 삶 속에서 그의 부인까지 지겨워하는 시칠리안 귀족이다. 그는 대저택에서 같이 여름을 보낸 아름다운 사촌 안젤라와 사랑에 빠진다. 이탈리아에서는 1960년대부터 이혼이 금지되어 있기에 페르디난도는 그의 부인을 죽이고 사촌과 결혼을 하려 한다. 그는 가장 명예로운 살인 방법을 택하려 한다. 페르디난도는 그의 부인을 유혹해 다른 남자의 품에 안기도록 하는 계획을 세워 명예를 지킨다는 명분으로 아내를 살해하고 재혼을 계획한다. 마을에서 치정에 의한 살인 사건이 발생하였으나 명예를 중시하는 이태리인의 관습상 죽은 간부보다는 살아있는 피해자 부인에게 동정표가 몰려 가벼운 처벌을 받는 것을 본 그는 기운을 얻어 치밀한 계획을 세운다. 우연히 아내에게 자신과 결혼하기 이전에 아내를 사랑했던 남자가 있음을 발견한 그는 그가 화가임을 알고 일부러 자신의 집 천방의 벽화 수리를 의뢰하고 아내와의 자리를 주선한다. 그리고 최신식 녹음기를 설치하고 둘 사이의 불륜을 잡을 만반의 준비를 갖춘다. 익명의 투서를 만들어 자신에게 아내가 불륜을 저지르고 있다는 증거도 남겨놓고 현장과 증거를 잡기에 혈안이 되어 있던 중 오랜 기다림 끝에 드디어 둘 사이에 사랑의 옛 감정이 되살아 나고 있음을 감지한다. 마을에 영화가 들어옴을 빌리로 온 가족이 모두 자리를 비워주어 일부러 자리를 피해준다. 그리고 다시 돌아와 그들을 쏘아 죽일 계획을 세우지만 이들은 세파루의 예상을 벗어나 달아나 버린다.
