양치기 곰보는 아내와 세명의 자녀, 그리고 할머니와 함께 몽고 대평원의 천막에서 생활하고 있다. 소박한 생활에 만족하며 살아가던 어느 날 러시아 트럭 운전사 세르게이가 텐트 근처에 트럭을 장기 주차하며 그들의 생활에 끼여든다. 곰보와 세르게이가 만드는 문화적 차이와 충돌은 극복할 수 없는 부분으로 보인다. 문명과 야만, 다산과 독신, 기계와 자연 등 그들의 대칭 항은 천편일률적이지만 또렷하게 대칭된다. 그러나 극복할 수 없어 보이던 이 그 두 사람은 서로에게서 많은 부분을 보고 배워 이해하게 된다.
초로의 이탈리아인 로마노는 증기선에서 만난 러시아인에게 자신의 사랑 이야기를 들려준다. 어느 날, 로마노는 짙고 깊은 눈동자의 아름다운 눈을 가진 러시아 여인을 우연히 만난다. 로마노는 그녀에게 한눈에 반하는데, 그녀는 그를 두고 떠난다. 로마노는 그녀를 잊지 못하고, 결국 가정을 버린 채 그녀를 찾아 러시아로 떠난다. 로마노의 사랑을 통해 삶의 희로애락을 관조한다. 영화에 쓰인 집시풍의 선율로, 애절한 사랑을 노래하는 러시아 민요 ‘검은 눈동자’는 애련한 분위기를 더한다. (영화의 전당 - 오래된 극장 2016)
In June 1941, the Extraordinary Defense Headquarters of Leningrad, under the leadership of Zhdanov and Voroshilov, decided to build the Luga defensive line. Heavy fighting west of Pskov forced units of the front to withdraw, and on July 9, Pskov was also abandoned. The battles in the Luga direction held back the enemy. The first attacks of the Germans, intending to cross the Luga line on the move, were repulsed with heavy losses for them.
The movie is set during the last days of a foreign intervention against Soviet Russia. Police are searching everywhere for a Bolshevik named Brodsky but cannot find him. Meanwhile, a man named Michel Voronov serves as a teacher to a rich woman's son, Zhen'ka.
