When the Sea Sends Forth a Forest

Through a 3D virtual universe simulated by a game engine intertwined with historical pictures, a lost moment of history can be experienced. The story revolves around the memory of a Chinese survivor of Khmer Rouge. This tragedy, which took the lives of 2 million people, continues to reshape our present in virtue of today's narration.

Sabine is looking for a missing image: a day that has left its mark forever and that everyone remembers but her. But maybe this absence is what allows her to move on with her life?

Solar Echoes

The sun is reflected in an Andalusian thermo-solar power plant whose architecture reminds us of ancient alchemical engravings, like a sacred temple of the 21st century. From its radiance come the voices of an antimatter physicist and an ecofeminist evoking their reflections on collapse, time and energy.

Bab Sebta is built of a series of reconstructions of diverse situations observed in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in the North of Morocco. A place where manufactured goods are entering the state exempt of taxes, to be sold at a discount prices in the cities of northern Morocco. Every day, thousands of people engage in cross-border exchanges of all kinds, more or less legal. Based on situations witnessed while crossing the border, this experimental video reconstructs the mise-en-scène of this unique place, involving real smugglers and police reports on trafficking, tricks and occasional tragedies.

Semira Adamu arrived in Belgium in 1998 when she fled from Nigeria. Held in a closed detention centre next to Brussels Airport, she died smothered with a cushion during a sixth attempt at forced repatriation. 20 years later, Pauline Fonsny re-enacts this “State assassination” that shook the country and led to the resignation of the Minister of the Interior at the time.

Some game trolls in the United States make a sport of getting other players “swatted” live during the game: they find out someone’s name and address, fake his caller ID, and make a bogus 911 call. The next thing you know, a SWAT team armed to the teeth is bursting into his house and giving him the fright of his life. This is all streamed live on camera, of course, so everyone can be in on the joke. Swatted is a cinematic exploration of this phenomenon based on 911 calls by offenders, YouTube videos of games and raids, and first-hand accounts of what it’s like to be swatted.

Three hyperelectro-sensitive people testify to their daily difficulties in an ultra-connected society.

They do accounting, handle human-resources matters and run sales for a car dealership. They answer the phone, peck at their keyboards, organize meetings and take lunch breaks. They learn to type faster, speak better, project self-confidence. With their pay, they buy fancy vacations or giant pythons. What’s going on in this (almost) ordinary company? In this drily funny short, Paul Heintz slowly sows doubts, highlighting the absurdity of corporate work. To what extent can fiction contaminate reality? Without editorializing, the artist reveals the modern working world for the strange carnival ride that it is.
