Baron Joubert
1차대전 발발직전 독일 정보장교와 프랑스 정보장교가 박물관에서 마타하리(Mata Hari: 실비아 크리스텔 분)라는 예명의 네덜란드인 맥 레오드 부인을 만난다. 그러나 전쟁이 발발하자, 이들 두 사람은 각자의 조국을 위해 싸우게 되고 그 와중 속에서 마타하리는 두사람과 사랑을 맺게 되어 독일과 프랑스를 위해 이중 간첩 역할을 하게 된다. 결국 마타하리는 프랑스군에 체포되어 형장의 이슬로 사라진다. 그후 퇴역한 독일 정보장교가 그녀를 잊지 못해 그녀와 만났던 박물관에서 회상에 젖어 있을 때 옛 친구인 프랑스 정보 장교와 재회하게 된다.
