14살 소년 톨리는 4명의 불한당들이 아버지를 때려 죽이는 장면을 목격하고 마는데, 톨리는 오로지 아버지에 대한 복수만을 꿈꾸고 다짐하며 성장한다. 20년이 흐른 뒤, 톨리의 부친을 살해한 불한당들은 범죄조직의 거물이 되어 암흑가를 장악한다. 그리고 복수심에 불타는 톨리는 범인들과 가까워지기 위해 스스로 범죄자가 된다. 풀러는 복수심에 사로잡힌 주인공을 통해 범죄에 대한 영화적 환상을 벗어나 범죄 자체의 암울하고 허탈한 속성을 끄집어내고, 그로 인해 점점 냉혹하게 변해가는 인간의 모습을 그린다.
