Paris, after the end of the Second World War: GI Jerry Mulligan stays in the City of Lights after falling in love with a mademoiselle at first sight. Being a stranger, Jerry gets to know pianist Adam Hochberg, who - unbeknownst to Jerry - adores the same woman. The two of them have to work together for a ballet with said woman, who is promised to Henri Baurel. Henri also gets acquainted with Jerry and Adam.

The LSO’s Principal Guest Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas celebrated his 70th birthday in 2015 with a concert focusing on British and Russian music, but with a nod to his native USA. He’s joined by the sensational young Chinese pianist Yuja Wang in Gershwin’s popular Concerto. Michael Tilson Thomas gave the US premiere of Colin Matthews’ Hidden Variables, an LSO commission during Matthews’ time as an Associate Composer with the LSO.

1930년 시점에 선구적인 컬러 영화일 뿐만 아니라 영화적 표현도 혁신적이다. 무성영화와 흑백 영화, 그리고 영화 이전에영화의 역할을 하던 극에 대한 전통이 녹아들어 시대를 넘는 쿨함으로 탄생하다. 20세기 초반에도 예상 외로 컬러 영화가 꽤 많이 나왔지만 폴 화이트먼의 오케스트라의 비주얼한 퍼포먼스를 엮은 이 영화는 공황 직전 거슈윈의 음악으로 흐르는 낙관적인 태도와 모든 문화의 mix로서 미국이 중심이 되고있다는 자신감으로 가득차 있다.

One of the first choreographers to bring the ‘American style’ to Europe, the legendary Gene Kelly was invited to create an original work for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1960. His jazzy, joyful Pas de Dieux was highly acclaimed at the time but has been rarely performed since. The Scottish Ballet has lovingly revived the original ballet and added a delightful new twist.

Porgy and Bess is a tale set in the slums of Charleston, SC. There in Catfish Row, a disabled beggar named Porgy tries to rescue Bess from her violent lover Crown, and drug dealer Sportin’ Life.
