근 미래, 지구에는 VUE(Violent Unknown Event)라는 신종 전염병이 돌고 있다. 이 병에 걸린 사람들은 지구상에 존재하지 않던 신종 언어를 구사하게 되고 이상하게도 새와 연관된 것에 집착한다. 또한 이들은 모두 이름 안에 fall이라는 철자를 가지고 있다. 92명의 VUE환자에 대한 의사 다큐멘터리인 [몰락]은 타르코프스키의 [솔라리스] 처럼 기이한 SF영화이다. 환자들은 도저히 해독할 수 없는 이야기를 웅얼거리고 화면에는 끊임없이 무의미한 철자들이 굴러다닌다. 이미지와 사운드는 불화하고 화면에 등장하지 않는 내레이터의 목소리, 극도로 차가운 도시의 외관이나 시골풍경, 자주 등장하는 새와 연관된 이미지들은 전작인 [H를 통한 산책]이나 [수직영화 속편] 등을 연상케 한다. 일설에 의하면 전위예술가 존 케인즈의 영향을 받아 만들었다는 [몰락]은 전 영국에 그의 이름을 새겨넣으며 영국영화로는 30년 만에 처음으로 BFI 최우수 작품상을 수상하였다.
