열한 살의 루시는 아버지와 함께 살고 있다. 어느 날 아버지의 폭행이 또 시작된다. 루시는 어린이보호소에 보내지고 16살의 로렌과 같은 방을 쓰게 된다. 둘 사이에는 우정이 싹트고 로렌과 루시는 어느 날 보호소에서 도망치지만 로렌이 부츠를 훔치다가 잡혀 다시 보호소로 돌아오게 된다. 루시는 이 혼란을 벗어나 엄마를 찾으러 가지만 엄마는 루시에게 보호소로 가는 버스표를 사주고 버스 정류장까지 함께 걸어간다. 루시는 보호소로 가는 버스에 올라타 불안한 미래를 향해 돌아선다.
