미국 유타주 루즈벨트와 버널 시 사이에 있는 400에이커 짜리 대형 농장은 스킨워커가 밤낮을 가리지 않고 출현하는 장소로 유명한데 스킨워커 랜치라 부르는 이곳은 1994년 가을에 쉐먼 가족이 전주인이 버리고 간 이곳을 헐값에 구입했다. 그 후, 18개월간 농장에 살면서 초자연적 현상을 겪고 스트레스를 받자 신문에 체험담을 공개하면서 농장을 판다고 하자 네바다주의 백만장자 로버트 M. 비겔로가 20만불에 사게된다. 비겔로는 농장에 큰 전망대를 세우고 네바다주와 유타주의 저명한 과학자들과 수의사들을 고용해 24시간 초현상을 조사하도록 했는데 실제로 초현상을 목격한 그는 국립발견과학연구소를 창립한다.
