바다 한 가운데에 초호화 유람선인 ‘아르고노티카’가 축제의 불을 밝힌 채 떠 있고 군사용 어뢰를 적재한 탐사정 한 대가 유람선이 떠 있는 곳으로 쾌속 질주하고 있다. 아르고노티카의 축제 분위기가 극에 달할 무렵, 마치 앞으로 다가올 공포를 미리 암시라도 하듯 유람선의 전원이 차단되는 사고가 발생하고 대낮 같던 선실은 암흑 속에 파묻혀버린다. 어이서 기괴하고 기분 나쁜 소리가 심연의 바닥으로부터 솟아오르고 유람선 안은 일순간에 지옥 같은 폐쇄 공간으로 돌변한다. 그리곤 승객들이 하나둘 흔적도 없이 사라지기 시작한다. 한편, 전속력으로 질주하던 탐사정은 유람선으로부터 분리되어 표류중이던 구조용 보트와 충돌하여 선체에 심한 파손을 입는다. 유람선까지 극적으로 도착한 탐사정 대장 피니간(Finnegan: 트리트 윌리암스 분)은 유령선으로 탈바꿈된 유람선의 선체를 발견하곤 경악을 금치 못한다. 게다가 피니간은 자신의 탐사정으로 이곳까지 데리고 온 일당들의 정체와 그들의 음모를 밝혀낸다. 탐사대로 신분을 위장하고 피니간의 탐사정을 빌려 탄 괴한들은 유람선의 내부에 미리 배치시켜 둔 스파이와 짜고 유람선의 금고에 보관된 어마어마한 보물을 털기로 했던 국제적인 해적단이다. 피니간에게 총구를 겨누고 유람선에 오른 악당들은 유람선의 내부가 너무나 고요하고 음산하다는 사실에 긴장을 풀지 못한다. 생존자를 찾아 헤매던 피니간은 유람선의 선실에서 국제 보석강도인 프릴리안(Trillian: 팜키 젠슨 분)과 마주친다. 피니간은 그녀로부터 유람선 안에 심상치않는 괴물체가 존재한다는 경고를 듣는다
