미국인 예술가 토마소는 젊은 유럽인 아내 니키와 세 살 난 딸 디디와 함께 살고 있다. 부부 사이가 점차 나빠지자 니키는 토마소에게 결혼 생활의 규칙을 바꿔 보자고 제안하는데 이러한 변화는 로마에 살면서 이탈리아어 강좌를 듣고, 학생들에게 연기를 가르치며, 동네 작은 상점에 들르는 토마소의 소박한 삶에 방해가 된다. 그리고 무엇보다도 어린 딸에게 느끼는 부정(父情)과, 딸이 자신에게 보이는 사랑에도 변화가 생긴다. 하지만 토마소의 예술적 기질은 또 다른 세계를 탐구한다. 토마소의 상상 속에 존재하는 이 세계에는 니키와 다른 여성들이 살고 있다. 그는 예수의 고난을 가진 부처이자, 적극적으로 재활에 임하는 약물 중독자이며 알코올 중독자다. 자신이 머무는 곳이 곧 집이 되지만 외국인으로서 의사소통에 애를 먹는다. 영화는 현실과 상상의 세계에 대한 생각에서 출발해 토마소와 니키가 진정으로 원하는 것이 무엇인지, 서로에게 줄 수 있는 것이 무엇이며, 가족을 위해 무엇을 할 수 있는지를 그린다.

1980년 초, 마약 공급권을 두고 이탈리아 마피아의 신구 패밀리 사이의 갈등이 고조되자 토마소 부세타는 조직생활을 청산하고 가족과 함께 브라질로 떠난다. 그러나 얼마 지나지 않아 그는 마피아의 신진세력인 콜레오네파가 자신의 동료들과 일가친척의 절반을 살해하고, 팔레르모에 두고 온 두 아들마저 실종됐다는 소식을 듣고 절망한다. 얼마 후, 토마소는 브라질 경찰에 마약 거래 혐의로 체포되고 이탈리아로 송환이 결정되자 이탈리아 사법기관에 마피아의 모든 것을 폭로하려는 위험한 결정을 하기에 이르는데.

On a ferry travelling towards Lampedusa, we find a teenager on his first day of work as a gravedigger and a boy on his first mission as a diver. They do not know each other, but when they will set foot on the island, both their lives will change forever: one has to retrieve the bodies of drowned shipwreck victims, the other one has to bury them. A sort of dance between life and death, innocence and its loss.

It is a sunny day on the river Trebbia. In the distance a patrol of German soldiers is approaching : they are nazis, guns blazing. It seems like they are chasing somebody. Tonino is the fugitive, a partisan with nothing left to do but dive into the river. This river will bring him to his real life.
