Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna (born July 16, 1948) is a Panamanian salsa singer, songwriter, lawyer, actor, Latin jazz musician, and politician, performing musically most often in the Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz genres. As songwriter, Blades brought the lyrical sophistication of Central American nueva canción and Cuban nueva trova as well as experimental tempos and political inspired Nuyorican salsa to his music, creating thinking persons' (salsa) dance music. Blades has composed dozens of musical hits, the most famous of which is "Pedro Navaja," a song about a neighborhood thug who appears to die during a robbery (his song "Sorpresas" continues the story), inspired by "Mack the Knife." He also composed and sings what many Panamanians consider their second national anthem. The song is titled "Patria" (Fatherland). He is an icon in Panama and is much admired throughout Latin America, and managed to attract 18% of the vote in his failed attempt to win the Panamanian presidency in 1994. In September 2004, he was appointed minister of tourism by Panamanian president Martín Torrijos for a five-year term. He holds a law degree from the University of Panama and a master's in international law from Harvard University. He is married to singer Luba Mason.

어린 시절부터 어머니의 강요로 트럼펫을 불던 블릭(Bleek Gilliam : 덴젤 워싱턴 분)은 성장하여 재능있는 연주인이 되고 음악만이 생애 최고의 목표였던 그는 연주악단을 구성, 활동하며 음악외의 어느 것에도 관심을 두지 않는다. 그러나 절정의 인기를 누리던 블릭 악단은 매니저인 자이언트의 상습 도박으로 인해 곤경에 처하게 된다. 점점 거세지는 도박단의 협박, 그리고 집단 폭행으로 인해 블릭은 심한 부상을 당하고 그 후유증으로 연주 활동을 포기하게 된다.

떠돌이 복서 자니(Johnny Walker: 미키 루크 분)는 웨즈리(Wesley Pendergass: 크리스토퍼 월켄 분)의 제안을 받아들여 보석 강도를 한다. 자니는 유원지를 경영하는 루비(Ruby: 데브라 푸어 분)를 사랑하게 된다. 시합 도중 링에 쓰러진 자니에게 두개골이 금이 갔다는 의사의 진단이 나오지만 웨즈리가 이를 비밀로 한다. 웨즈리는 다시 자니에게 보석 강도를 하자고 하고 자니도 이를 수락한다. 자니는 루비와 함께 매일 루비의 유원지를 수리하던 중 유원지가 경영부진으로 남의 손에 넘어 갈 지경이 되었음을 알게 된다. 그때 자니에게 많은 파이트머니의 게임 요청이 들어왔다. 웨즈리는 자니에게 그 상태를 알리며 시합을 만류하지만 쟈니는 말을 듣지 않는다. 루비를 돕고 싶은 것이다. 목요일-죽음을 선고받은 복서 쟈니는 억수로 쏟아지는 폭우 속에서 링 위에 선다.

30대 중반의 흑인 케빈 레네헨(Eddie/Kevin: 리차드 프라이어 분)은 부동산 사업가다. 케빈은 선수금 5만 달러만 내면 즉시 인수받는 조건의 복합 영화관 건물을 위해 폭력배 조직에게 돈을 빌리러 간다. 폭력배 조직이 운영하는 가게에서 만난 장님이 주는 담배를 가지고 돈을 빌리러 들어간 케빈은 훔친 다이아몬드를 운반해 달라는 폭력배의 협박을 받고 담배를 꺼내는 순간 그 속에서 경찰이 숨겨둔 녹음기가 나오고 경찰이 출동하여 폭력배들은 모두 잡힌다. 그 자리에 있던 케빈도 일당에게 협력한 혐의를 받고 억울한 옥살이를 하게 되는데 함께 감방에 갇힌 폭력배들은 케빈을 죽이겠다고 협박한다. 생명의 위협을 느낀 케빈은 감방 생활을 피하기 위해 거짓으로 정신병자 행세를 하고 정신 병동으로 옮겨지지만 가짜임이 들통난다. 정신병동이 있는 병원의 원장 챔버즈(Chambers: 조 맨테그나 분)는 직원을 착취하면서 돈만 챙기는 수전노다. 원장은 야간 관리를 책임진 실장으로 첫 출근하는 미혼녀 애트우드(Rachel Atwood: 레이첼 티코틴 분)에게 일을 인계하고 정신병동에 들러 케빈에게 감방으로 다시 가라는 선고를 한다. 그러나 박스를 비롯한 정신병동에 있는 같은 처지의 동료들은 케빈을 내보낼 수 없다고 항의하면서 원장을 가두고 케빈은 그 틈을 타서 도망친다. 한편 갑자기 몰아닥친 폭풍우로 인하여 병원은 아수라장으로 변하고 질서를 잡지 못하던 애트우드는 도망다니는 케빈을 발견하고 그를 의사로 착각하고 케빈도 엉겁결에 가짜 의사 행세를 시작한다. 케빈은 애트우드를 도와 온갖 어려운 일을 처리해 주는 동안 두 사람 사이에는 사랑의 감정이 싹튼다. 정신병동에 갇힌 원장을 구하면서 애트우드는 케빈이 가짜 의사라는 사실을 알고 크게 실망하지만 그를 도망치도록 돕는다. 도망치던 케빈은 병원에 화재가 발생한 것은 보고 되돌아와 병원과 모든 사람들을 구하고 케빈은 자유의 몸이 되어 애트우드와 다시 만날 약속을 한다.
