우간다의 카트웨. 그곳에서 옥수수를 팔며 어렵게 생활하던 피오나(마디나 날완가)는 어느날 체스를 가르치는 곳에서 공짜 죽을 나눠준다는 소식에 그곳을 찾게 된다. 그리고 어느덧 체스판에 앉아 경기를 하는 피오나는 자신도 모르게 체스라는 경기에 빠져들게 된다. 1년 후 피오나의 실력은 그곳의 아이들 중에서 가장 뛰어났고, 그녀를 가르치던 마이클(데이빗 오예로워)은 아이들과 체스경기에 참여하게 된다. 그리고 그곳에서 금메달을 딴 피오나는 그후 승승장구를 거듭하여 최연소 우간다 대표가 되어, 아마추어 아프리카 선수권대회에서 우승을 하게 된다. 그 일로 바깥세상에 대한 눈을 뜨게 되는 피오나. 하지만 그 일은 피오나를 교만하게 만들었고, 카트웨의 생활은 더이상 피오나를 만족시키지 못하게 되는데...
