Convinced he will fail, he survives the summer organising a beach party, having lustful thoughts about two girls he believes are unobtainable and fending off the advances from a visiting American family friend, all whilst coping with his oddball family.

Having done time rather than inform on his partner in a failed burglary, Eddie now struggles to raise his two daughters alone. 아일랜드 한 가난한 농부의 장남이었던 불 매케이브("Bull" McCabe: 리차드 해리스 분)는 아들, 타이그 매케이브(Tadgh McCabe: 숀 빈 분)와 함께 불모지였던 한 과부의 땅을 10년 동안 열심히 가꿔 기름지게 만들어놓는다. 아들의 장래를 위해 불은 그 땅을 사기 원하지만 10년 동안 타이그와 매케이브의 친구, 버드(The 'Bird' O'Donnell: 존 허트 분)로 인해 밤마다 두려움에 떨었던 과부는 그 땅을 공매에 붙인다. 불은 사전에 50파운드의 경매가로 그 땅을 사려하지만 이미 양키(Peter, "The Yank": 톰 베린저 분) 편이 돼버린 신부(Father Doran: 숀 맥긴니 분)와 플래니건(Flanagan: 존 코우리 분)이라는 경매장이의 방해로 실패한다. 이에 격분한 불은 아들과 양키를 싸움 붙여 양키를 손보려 하지만 지나치게 흥분한 불은 본의 아니게 양키를 죽이게 되고 타이그는 충격을 받게 된다. 더군다나, 불과 아내가 죽은 형 쉐이미에 대해 얘기하는 것을 엿듣게 되고 그 길로 평소에 관심있던 집시 처녀 케이씨를 찾아가 둘은 같이 마을을 떠나려 한다. 불은 어떻게 해서든 아들을 말려 보려고 하지만 타이그가 말을 듣지 않자 반 정신이 나간 상태로 소 떼를 몰고 절벽으로 가는데...
