He is also surprised by things that were new in America at the time, such as automatic swinging doors. When he finally reaches the man who bought the horse, he is led to believe there is no hope of getting it back. However, the last scene shows both him and the stallion back at the ranch with several foals.

크리스마스 이브, 어느 아파트에 새로 이사온 쉐퍼드 헨더슨(제임스 스튜어트)은 갑자기 전화가 고장이 나자, 1층에서 진귀한 물건들을 판매하는 길리안(킴 노박)의 가게로 내려가 전화를 빌려 쓴다. 그 일이 인연이 되어 두 사람은 만나게 되고, 쉐퍼드는 길리안이 숙모와 함께 조디악에서 크리스마스 이브를 보낸다는 말을 듣고 호기심이 생겼다. 결혼을 앞둔 연인 멀(자니스 룰)을 데리고 조디악을 찾아간다, 두 여자를 소개하자, 멀과 길리안은 대학 동창이었다. 길리안의 오빠는 그곳에서 밴드 연주자로 일하고 있었는데 장난기가 발동하여 멀 뒤에서 시끄럽게 연주하자 그만 기겁을 하고 달아난다. 사실 길리안의 정체는 마녀이다. 길리안 뿐만 아니라 오빠인 니키와 숙모까지 모두 마법사인데 장난 삼아 쉐퍼드를 마법으로 유혹을 하려는 의식을 치르고 있는데 쉐퍼드가 그 장면을 목격하고 불이난 줄 알고 깜짝 놀라 길리안의 가게로 뛰어 든다. 별일 아니라며 그에게 권한 브랜디를 마시자 갑자기 길리안에게 매혹되어 키스를 하게 된다. 쉐퍼드는 마녀인 길리안의 마법을 걸려 잠시 놀리는 사랑놀이에 걸려든 것이다. 다음날 멀과 결혼해야 한다는 사실도 망각하고 길리안에게 빠져든다. 그러나 길리안은 어딘지 냉담하다. 마법사들은 같은 부류끼리만 어울리고 일반 보통 사람들과는 어울리지 않는다. 다만 마음에 드는 이성을 발견할 경우는 마법을 걸어서 그 사람의 마음을 빼앗고 재미삼아서 사귀며, 어떤 경우에도 눈물을 흘리는 법이 없고, 절대로 진짜 사랑에 빠져서는 안된다는 마법사들 만의 법이 있다. 그런데 길리안이 진짜 사랑을 하게 된 것이다. 길리안은 마법사의 룰을 어겼다. 눈물까지 흘렸다. 마법사 길리안이 쉐퍼드에게 건 마법의 힘이 아니라 한 여자로 쉐퍼트를 진심으로 사랑하게 되는, 마녀의 사랑이야기 이다.
