It is the War Between the States and Peyton Farquhar stands at the end of a plank a noose around his neck. He has been betrayed by a stranger, a scout for the Union Army, and now he faces death. He stands to lose a beautiful young wife, family and home. The soldiers make preparations for his death, it is routine for them. Peyton's mind races, he must escape. If only he can free his hands. The plank falls and incomprehensibly the rope breaks. He manages to swim away and evade the gunshots from the soldiers. He unbelievably finds himself on shore running towards home. After what seems like days of weary travel he arrives.

During the 1864 battle of the Wilderness, three Union soldiers and three Confederate Soldiers get seperated from their units as twilight engulfs the ravaged battlefield. The men wander alone through the dangerous woods, separate of each other, until they meet by chance on the banks of a quiet creek. The men meet and spend the night around a campfire, not realizing they are enemies until the next morning when the sun rises and a new day of battle begins.

오돈 부부는 로렌조라는 다섯살난 아들이 있다. 하지만 어느날 불행이 닥쳐오는데, 원인도 치료법도 모르는 ALD라는 진단을 받게되고 곧 죽게 된다는 비보였다. 그러나 이 치명적인 죽음 앞에 오돈부부는 굴복하지 않고 오직 지식과 논리를 바탕으로 아들의 병마와 싸우게 되고 마침내는 승리에 도달하게 된다. 오돈 부부는 ALD에 대해 연구하기 시작한다. 그러나 관련된 서적도 적고 전문의들은 조직화 되어있지 않다고 느껴 그들은 ALD 심포지엄을 조직하기에 이른다. 어느날 우연히 폴란드 의학지에서 로렌조의 병과 비슷한 증세를 쥐에다 실험한 기사를 발견해 의사에게 자문을 구한다. 오돈부부는 ALD가 나쁜 지방산이 생기면서 생기는 병이므로 나쁜 지방산을 제거해 주면 되지 않겠냐는 논리에서 한발자욱 해결책 가까이 나가게 된다. 마침내 1984년, 역사적인 "로렌조의 경주"는 시작이 된다. 여러 어려움이 닥치게 되나 그들은 포기하지 않고 새로운 도전을 계속한다. 1984년 4월 로렌조 아버지는 식용이 가능한 불포화 지방산을 발견해야겠다는 생각이 떠오르게 되고 생화학자에게 이뢰하여 월간 하루도 쉬지 않고 연구한 끝에 1kg의 소중한 기름을 발견하여 오돈 가족에게 보낸다. 그 이후로 이 기름은 '로렌조 오일'이라 불리게 되는데...
