The late summer of 1918. Paul, Willi and Heinrich from an age-old German town are good friends, although there is a great deal that divides them. Heinrich comes from an officer's family with an army tradition and is preparing to enter cadet college. Paul's father and grandfather are workers, and Willi, left to depend on himself, works as a hotel messenger. The last year of the war is hard for everyone, but while Paul and Willi know their own minds and do not hesitate to help the war fugitives Tony and Sepp, for Heinrich everything is more complicated.

Zofie and Dominika, two girls of very different temperaments, become friends during hop-picking volunteer work in the summer. Zofie (Jaroslava Schallerová) is serious to the point of reticence and she is delighted with her friendship with Dominika. For the self-assured and superficial Dominika (Irena Svárová) the whole thing is just a momentary whim. When she leaves the work camp before everybody else, she doesn't even say goodbye to Zofie. The two girls meet again after the holidays as first-year students at medical school, and become close again during the nursing techniques class.

Sherlock Holmes likes to play violin and expects a great career in music. He gets a place in a spa orchestra, but he is again and again distracted by criminal cases. Therefore he is the only one who does not see that his violin has no future. He solves the criminal mysteries in passing but the final test shows that the famous detective is tone-deaf.

주인공은 부족함 없는 부르주아적 생활을 영위하고 있는 중산 계급 시민이다. 언제나 ‘우리는 행복한 가족’이라 말하고 아내를 포함한 식구들에게 ‘천사’라고 부르는 그는 얼핏 보기에 마음씨 좋고 너그러운 가장으로 보인다. 하지만 곧 그는 편협한 나치 이데올로기에 물들어 유대인에 대한 살인과 밀고를 서슴지 않는 부역자로 변한다. 사람들 앞에서도 스스럼없이 그 생각들을 강요하기도 한다. ‘이 세상은 얼마나 아름다운가’ 혹은 ‘크리스마스는 삶에 있어 가장 행복한 시간’이라고 읊조리는 그에게 그것에 어울리지 않는 것들은 제거돼야 마땅한 것이다. 너무나 평안한 얼굴로 교수형을 집행하기도 하는 그는 이데올로기가 낳은 희생자나 다름없다.

The Karpísek married couple, both doctors, are leaving for London for two months on business. They entrust their five-year old son Jozánek to the care of their neighbor, Mrs Pokorná.

한 무리의 남녀들이 숲 속에서 피크닉을 즐기고 있다. 그런 그들 앞에 루돌프라는 남자와 일행들이 나타나 끌고 간다. 루돌프는 남녀들을 한 자리에다 묶어두고 장난치다가 파티 주최자인 중년 남성에게 혼나고, 남녀들은 중년 남성을 따라 숲 속 파티장으로 이동한다. 이윽고 파티가 시작하려던 도중 한 여자의 남편이 파티장을 떠났다는 사실이 밝혀진다.

Pavel is a Czech partisan fighter in the waning days of the war. Just as peace is declared, Pavel is shot in the spine and sent to the hospital emergency ward. As he fades in and out of consciousness, he recalls the events that led to his participation in the underground. Holding German occupation commander Engelchen responsible for all the horrors and deprivations heaped upon his comrades, Pavel is kept alive by the possibility of recovering and exacting vengeance upon the Nazi officer - no matter how long it takes.
