톰과 메이는 강가에서 옥수수 밭을 가꾸며 살아가는 가난한 농부 부부. 둘은 어려운 생활 속에서도 서로 의지하며 옥수수를 팔아 살아가고 있는데, 이곳을 댐을 막아 농토에 관개 수로를 건설하려고 하는 업자로부터 땅을 팔고 떠나라는 편지를 받는다. 톰은 부모님이 묻힌 이곳을 떠날 생각은 전혀 없지만, 오히려 일을 하러온 일꾼들은 아내 메이에게 관심을 보인다. 돈이 궁색해진 톰은 제철 조립공장에 취업을 하고 옥수수밭은 메이에게 맡겨놓는다. 작업환경이 엉망인 공장에서는 수시로 파업이 일어나고, 메이가 일을 하다가 손을 다쳐 어쩔 수 없이 땅을 팔아야 하는 상황이 온다.
