"산주"는 인도 영화계의 화려한 스타배우에서 테러리스트로 몰락하며 영화보다 더 영화적인 삶을 살아온 배우 산자이 더트의 실제 인생을 담은 일종의 전기영화. 감독이면서 두려운 존재였던 아버지의 영향으로 연기를 시작하고, 스타의 반열에 올랐지만 마약과 화려한 여성편력으로 발리우드의 소문난 악동으로 살던 산자이가 1992년 뭄바이테러사건에 연루된 혐의로 실형을 선고 받아 수감되었던 시절을 보여준다. 대중의 호불호가 갈리는 인물을 다룬 전기영화가 피해갈 수 없는 숙명처럼, 개봉 당시 영화에 대한 호평과 함께 산자이 더트를 미화했다는 비판과 더불어 다양한 논쟁들을 촉발시키며 화제를 모으기도 했다. 올해 부산국제영화제 부산 클래식에서 상영되는 히라니 감독의 데뷔작 "문나 형님, 의대에 가다"의 주연 배우가 "산주"의 실제 주인공인 산자이 더트였다는 점이 관객들에겐 흥미로운 연결고리가 될 것이다.
