In France, the single translator Diane Siprien adopts an Asian baby named Liu-San in a foundation directed by Sybille Weber. Years later, a weird mark appears on the boy's chest and Diane and Liu share their dreadful nightmares. Diane is assigned for a three-day job in Germany and she leaves Liu with her friend Sybille. 1960년대의 프랑스 뉴웨이브의 시작으로 꼽는 장-피에르 멜빌(Jean-Pierre Melville) 감독의 1955년도 갱스터 영화 을 닐 조단 감독이 새롭게 리메이크한 작품. 영화의 제목은 여러번 바뀌었는데, 처음에는 '더블 다운(Double Down)'으로 정해졌다가 '정직한 도둑(the Honest Thief)'로, 다시 '선량한 도둑(the Good Thief)'으로 바뀌었다. 그러다 '정직한...'으로 복귀하는 듯 하더니 결국 현재의 제목으로 남게 되었다. 2500만에서 3000만 달러 사이의 예산을 들인 이 영화는 미국 개봉했을 당시에는 박스 오피스 상으로 크게 재미를 보지 못하였다. 2003년 4월 초 개봉하여 첫 주에는 9개관을 시작으로 점차 소규모로 확대 개봉하였는데, 4월말에 이르러서는 202개관을 통해 누적된 수입이 고작 2백만 달러에 그치는 등 뚜렷한 흥행의 기미는 보이지 못했다. 그에 반해 평론가들은 닉 놀테의 연기에 손을 들어 주고 아울러 매혹적인 스타일에 좋은 점수를 얹어주었다. 랄프 파인즈(Ralph Fiennes)가 냉혹한 미술상으로 잠시 등장하며, 유명한 에밀 쿠스투리차 감독이 도둑 일당 중 하나로 출연했다.
