A woman is wrongly accused of murdering her husband in Edwardian London. Just before the outbreak of World War I, Edith Graydon married her boyfriend Percy Thomson. He survives the war but theirs is not a happy marriage. She doesn't really love him and he feels it every day. He's also possessive and their daily life is a constant battle. She meets and falls in love with Frederick Bywaters, her sister's one-time boyfriend. They have a long affair and her desperate attempts to get either a formal separation of divorce from her husband falls on deaf ears. They are at their wits end and Bywaters decides to do something about it. On a dark evening when Edith is walking with her husband, Bywaters stabs him to death. Edith is charged with murder along with Bywaters and both are found guilty. She claims her innocence right up until the day they are both executed by hanging in 1923. Based on a true story.

Stiff Upper Lips is a broad parody of British period films, especially the lavish Merchant-Ivory productions of the 'eighties and early 'nineties. Although it specifically targets A Room with a View, Chariots of Fire, Maurice, A Passage to India, and many other films, in a more general way Stiff Upper Lips satirises popular perceptions of certain Edwardian traits: propriety, sexual repression, xenophobia, and class snobbery.

왕정복고 시대 직후의 오만한 귀족들은 자신들의 집과 정원, 재산을 뽐내기 위해 화가를 고용하는 것이 관례였다. 귀족인 허버트 부인(자넷 수즈만 분)은 재능있으나 콧대가 높은 젊은 풍경 화가 네빌 씨(안소니 히긴스 분)와 특이한 계약을 맺는다. 남편이 없는 동안 영지를 열 두 장의 그림으로 그려주는 대신 상당한 보수를 받고, 화가가 원할 때마다 성관계를 가지겠다는 것이었다. 네빌은 꽉짜인 일정표대로 그림에 전념하고, 다분히 모욕적인 태도로 허버트 부인과의 관계를 즐긴다. 한편 그림이 진전될수록 네빌은 전날에는 없었던 물건들이 정원 여기저기에 놓여있는 것을 발견하게 된다. 그러던 어느 날 물에 빠진 허버트 백작(데이브 힐 분)의 시체가 영지 안에서 발견되고, 허버트의 딸 탈만 부인(앤-루이스 램버트 분)은 네빌에게 접근하여 그의 그림속에 살인과 관련된 각종 암시가 들어 있으며, 이는 화가가 살인에 대해 미리 알고 있었다는 것을 보여주는 증거라고 지적해주는데... 네빌은 탈만 부인의 지적을 무시하지만, 탈만 부인은 네빌을 보호해준다는 핑계로 그와의 성관계를 요구하고, 네빌은 이를 받아들이게 된다. 열 두 장의 그림을 모두 마친 네빌은 잠시 영지를 떠나지만, 허버트 백작의 시체가 발견되었던 정원의 한 구석을 열 세 번째의 그림으로 그리기 위해 다시 돌아온다. 그는 허버트 부인에게 화해를 청하고 그녀와 다시 정사를 가지는데, 이 자리에 나타난 딸과 허버트 부인의 입을 통해 사실 그들이 원했던 것은 영지를 상속할 후손이었다는 실토를 듣게된다(탈만은 생식능력이 없었다). 저녁 어둠 속에서 그림을 마치려고 서두르는 네빌 앞에 복면을 쓴 귀족들이 나타나고 이들은 네빌을 실컷 모욕한 후 마침내 그를 살해한다. 그러나 정작 허버트 백작을 누가 죽였는가는 끝까지 미궁에 남게 된다.
