부패한 건설회사 사장의 아들 닉(빈센트 스파노)을 중심으로 노동자, 부패 경찰, 돈 많은 세력가, 흑인 분리주의자, 사기꾼, 마피아와 범죄를 묵인하는 정치인 등 30여명이 넘는 다양한 캐릭터들이 톱니바퀴처럼 맞물려 있다. 닉은 아버지가 빌딩 주인인 덕에 편한 조합 일을 하며 하루 종일 건설현장에 나가 빈둥거린다. 닉은 아무 일도 하지 않고 월급을 받는 걸 견디지 못하고 결국 직장을 그만둔다. 아버지와의 갈등으로 방황하던 닉은 폭력 경찰 남편과 이혼하고 혼자 사는 안젤라(바바라 윌리암스)와 사랑에 빠진다. 하지만 타락한 도시는 이들의 사랑과 꿈을 조롱할 뿐이다.

호러, 드라마, SF가 뒤섞인 기이한 잡종의 이 영화는 세 편의 이야기를 한데 엮은 전연 독창적이고 자극적인 영화이다. 첫 번째 이야기에서 의사는 인간의 성욕의 근원을 발견한 후 기이하게 변모된다. 다음 이야기에서 두 죄수는 강박적인 동성애적 관계에 휘말리게 된다. 마지막의 환상적인 이야기는 더욱 기이하다. 살인을 저지르고 가족과 마을을 떠난 일곱 살 짜리 소년의 이야기 속에서 가족의 세계로부터 해방된 어린 소년은 자신이 벌인 일들을 바라보는 세인의 시선을 의아해 한다. 음울하면서도 더없이 매혹적인 은 각각 서로 다른 영화적 양식을 경유하며 부조리한 상상력을 교직한다.
Production Design
In this black and white independent melodrama, Joe Belinsky (Eric Mitchell) doesn't know how to cope with his wife's pregnancy and his loss of an insurance agency job, and feels adrift. As a consequence of that, he takes a job working the counter of a low-cost, somewhat hip eatery, and meets a French girl with whom he has a brief affair. Though the affair ends, it has created an obsession in him - first with the French girl, and later with slim young women in general. All of them reject him, and he leaves his waiting job to prowl around for these inaccessible beauties. Meanwhile, his wife is having their baby.
