페루의 수도 리마 근교의 작은 마을에 살고 있는 아름다운 파우스타는 자신이 ‘슬픈 모유’병에 걸렸다고 믿고 있다. 내전의 참혹한 시기에 테러범들에게 강간을 당한 임산부들이 아이를 낳으면 그 모유를 통해 어머니의 공포가 아이에게 전염되어 그 아이들은 영혼이 없이 태어난다는 게 바로 ‘슬픈 모유’병이다. 혼자서는 길을 걷지도 못해서 누가 꼭 데려다 주어야만 하며, 툭하면 코피를 흘리고 기절해 버리는 파우스타는 강간을 예방하기 위해 자기 몸을 지키는 방법으로 질 속에 감자를 넣고 있다. 엄마가 갑자기 돌아가시자 엄마의 시신을 고향 땅에 묻어드리기로 결심하는 파우스타. 장례비를 마련하기 위해 리마 시내의 대 저택에 살고 있는 피아니스트의 집에 하녀로 취직한다. 괴팍한 성격의 피아니스트는 우연히 파우스타의 아름다운 노래소리를 듣게 되고, 노래 한 번 부를 때마다 진주를 한 알씩 주겠다고 약속한다. 진주를 판 돈으로 엄마를 고향으로 모실 수 있을 거라 믿었던 파우스타, 그러나 이야기는 약속대로 흘러가지 않는데…
