1945년 베트남의 한 농촌마을에서 태어난 레 리(부사로 산루크)는 농사를 지으며 열심히 살아간다. 세 번에 걸친 전쟁을 겪으며 그녀는 베트공에 가담했다는 누명을 쓴다. 정부에 끌려갔다 간신히 풀려나지만 베트공에게 의심을 받고 강간을 당한다. 어렵게 연명하던 그녀는 스티브 버틀러라는 미군을 만나 결혼한다. 함께 미국에 가지만 생활에 적응하지 못하고 파경에 이른다. 하지만 레 리는 다시 베트남에 돌아가 새로운 삶을 시작하는데...
