Tourists, foreigners and outcasts converge on the streets of Osaka in this sprawling ensemble drama by Japan-based, Malaysia-born filmmaker Lim Kah Wai. His eighth feature explores the lesser-known aspects of the Asian melting pot city through the eyes and experiences of a dozen characters who struggle to find their place in society: among them a Nepali refugee with dreams of opening a restaurant, a Burmese student struggling to make ends meet while working two jobs, and a Taiwanese sex tourist who travels to meet his favorite adult video actress.

Having failed with his business and gone absolutely penniless, Masao (45) divorced with his wife, and is currently leading a hopeless life in Ibaraki. One day, a mysterious high school girl, going by the name Emiko, showed up before Masao. A group of four decides to commit suicide using gigantic fireworks. But every time the fireworks explode, they find themselves back in time before they carried out the plan. They suspect the cause to be the young age of one of the members and try to convince the high school girl to quit.

The film follows the relationship between a mother and her son. In 1945, the mother played by Sayuri Yoshinaga fled with her two sons from the Russians to Hokkaido. In 1972, her son played by Masato Sakai returns to Japan after finding success in the U.S.

Set at a time where entertainment like music, movies and novels are all banned. Mizuto and Tokio work at a factory making screws. Their lives are monotonous. One day, they discover a place where music has been preserved and they are attracted to music. They learn of “Sanoba Noizu” where music is performed secretly and dream of going there. 베를린영화제 감독상을 수상할 정도로 한때는 잘 나갔지만 B급 성인영화 감독으로 전락한 주인공 ‘신지’(이타오 이츠지). 더 이상 작품이 없어 무력한 하루하루를 보낼 수밖에 없는 ‘신지’의 비통함은 커져만 가고, 꺾여버린 그의 현실은 도무지 나아질 기미가 보이질 않는다. 한편 ‘신지’의 고독한 매력은 주변 여성들을 묘하게 자극하고, ‘신지’는 그녀들과 관계하며 위안을 얻고자 하는데… 애잔한 짐노페디의 선율을 따라 흘러가는 그의 일주일은 해피엔딩으로 끝날 수 있을까?
