낮에는 눈을 뜬 채 잠이 들고, 밤이 되면 몽롱한 기운으로 밤길을 거닐며 산책을 하는 특이한 생활방식의 소유자 데스몬드. 그는 매일 밤 산책을 시작해 애인이 잠에서 깨기 전까지 침대에 도착하는 생활을 반복한다. 그러던 어느날 절친한 동료인 알마가 기차역에서 감전사 당하는 이상한 일이 발생하자, 친구 킴벌리가 데스몬드의 새로운 파트너가 된다. 며칠 뒤, 데스몬드는 산책 중 한 남자가 살해당하는 모습을 보는데, 실수로 희생자의 시계를 가지고 오게 된다. 이 살인사건의 수사를 맡은 형사 벨라도나는 조사를 진행하던 중 데스몬드가 가지고 있는 시계가 희생자 우도의 것이라는 것을 밝혀낸다. 또한 데스몬드의 애인 체니가 우도에게 그 시계를 선물한 장본인이라는 사실이 밝혀진다. 데스몬드는 유력한 살인 용의자로 몰리게 되고, 희생자의 가족은 시체도 찾지 못한 채 장례식을 치른다. 한편 데스몬드에서 살인 누명을 벗겨 주겠다는 익명의 전화가 걸려오는데...
