흑인 청년인 케니 커크란드는 음악 창조에 탁월한 능력을 가지고 있지만 기본적인 작업환경도 갖춰저있지 않아서 기회를 엿보면 DJ생활을 하고 있다.형은 깡패와 싸우다 죽고, 엄마와 브레이크 댄스를 잘 추는 동생 리와 함께 살고 있는 케니는 자칭 매니저로 나선 수다꾼 챨리의 주선으로 결국 스타덤에 오른다. 그러면서 케니처럼 현대 음악을 작곡하고 대학에서 교편을 잡고 있는 트레이시와 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 전철이나 벽에다 낙서가 아닌 예술 작품을 그려 도시 환경을 아름답게 만들겠다는 케니의 친구 레이몬은 친구들 외에는 인정해 주지 않는 외로운 예술가이다. 아버지의 구박과 카르멘과 결혼하지 않고 낳은 아들과 살 집이 없어 친정에 맡겨 놓고 있어 고민하다, 친구들의 도움으로 빈 아파트를 수리하고 취직을 해서 생활인으로 전환한다. 그러다가, 새로 나온 하얀 새 전철에 그림을 그리다가, 전부터 자신을 그림에 낙서를 하던 스핏을 발견하고 쫓다가, 격투 끝에 그와 감전으로 사망한다. 케니는 레이몬의 작품을 전시하고 그를 추모하는 음악회를 열어 성공리에 끝내고, 아들이 전철이나 벽에 낙서나 한다고 생각하던 케니의 아버지도 죽은 아들이 남긴 그림을 보고는 감탄하고는 후회한다.
