명시대, 내감사무를 관장하는 동창과 서창의 우두머리 조공공과 이공공은 당시 양대 세력을 이루고 있다. 충신 조공공은 이공공의 모반 계획을 알아차리고 고소저에게 이공공의 세력지인 집현산장을 제거토록 하고, 아울러 집현산장 장주인 손옥백에게 띄운 밀서를 가로채려는 계획을 세운다. 한 때 무림에서 명성을 떨쳤던 고소저는 어릴 때부터 키운 맹성훈과 엽상을 살수로 키워 쾌활림이라는 조직을 만들어 무림에서 막강한 세력을 구축한다. 엽상이 4명의 고수를 데리고 집현산장을 습격하다가 부상을 입는다. 엽상의 습격이 실패로 돌아가자 고소저는 맹성혼에게 집현산장을 다시 습격케한다. 맹성혼은 거사를 위해 사랑하는 아내 호접과 잠시 떨어져 신분을 가장하고 집현산장에 잠입한다. 맹의 뛰어난 무술에 탄복한 손옥백은 자신의 애첩 묘소소를 소실로 선사하는 등 맹에게 각별하게 대한다. 사실 묘소소는 고소저의 명으로 10년간 손옥백의 신변에 매복해 있었고, 맹과 혼례가 있던 밤 장오백 수중의 밀서를 훔쳐내다 발각되어 살해당하고 만다

During China's 1920s Republican Period, warlords carve out personal fiefdoms across the country and impose self-serving laws with the barrel of a gun.
