요크셔의 광부, 프랭크(Frank Machin: 리차드 해리스 분)는 프로 럭비 선수로 성공하고 싶어한다. 노력 끝에 프로 럭비 선수로 인정을 받게 된 프랭크는 많은 돈은 벌게 되나 점점 난폭해지고 고집이 세어진다. 프랭크는 마가렛(Mrs. Hammond: 레이첼 로버츠 분)이라는 미망인과 사랑에 빠지는데 이 둘의 관계는 감정적인 교류보다는 육체적인 관계 위주의 것이었다. 그러던 어느 날, 프랭크의 동료의 결혼식에서 마가렛은 사람들 앞에서 뻐기는 프랭크를 견디다 못해 맹렬히 공격하고 급기야 둘은 헤어진다. 하지만 프랭크에게는 돈이 행복의 전부였기에 그녀를 되찾지 못한다.
