실화를 바탕으로 한 작품으로 아들과 연인을 두고 멕시코에서 미국으로 건너간 남자의 가슴아픈 사연을 그린 영화다. 이반은 멕시코에서 요리사로 일하면서 어린 아들을 키우고 있는 게이다. 결혼해서 아들을 낳았지만 자신의 성정체성 때문에 결혼생활을 유지할 수 없던 그는 헤라르도라는 남자를 만나 사랑에 빠진다. 이반은 멕시코를 떠나 미국으로 갈 결심을 하고 먼저 미국에 가서 나중에 헤라르도와 아들을 미국에 데리고 오겠다고 약속한다. 그러나 불법체류자로 미국에서 살게 된 이반은 약속을 지킬 수 없는 상황에 놓인다.
