The story is set in New York which is lit up with Christmas lights. Tokyo Metropolitan Police officer Akari Kido is directing traffic while on her international exchange training program, when a witch-like character pulls a "Christmas Party" prank. Just before a runaway trailer truck smashes into Akari, a mysterious girl suddenly appears and shouts, "I'm going to protect New York and Akari!"

마도카와 사야카, 쿄코 셋이서 학교에 등교했는데, 안경을 쓴 모습의 호무라가 전학생으로 들어오게 된다. 그녀도 똑같은 마법소녀였으며, 마미와 마도카, 쿄코, 사야카, 호무라 이렇게 5명의 마법소녀 콤비가 적과 맞써 싸우는데, 반역의 이야기에서는 마녀와 싸우는 것이 아닌, '나이트메어'와 싸우는 것이다. 나이트메어와 싸우며 행복한 일상을 보내는 중 호무라는 이 세계에 대한 위화감을 갖게 되었으며, 쿄코와 같이 미타키하라의 밖의 카자미노 시에 가보자고 제안을 했고, 카자미노 행의 버스를 몇번이고 반복해서 타지만, 도착한 곳은 카자미노 시가 아닌 미타키하라 시였다. 버스가 아닌 걸어서 카자미노 시에 가는 것도 시도해 보았지만 실패로 끝났다. 호무라는 쿄코에게 이 일에 대해 모두에게 비밀로 해 주었으면 좋겠다고 부탁했으며, 쿄코는 납득하지 못하는 듯 하였으나, 끝내 부탁을 받아들였다.

여름방학 중인 어느날, 도쿄에 대규모의 강진이 일어난다. 둘이서 오다이바의 로봇전시회에 갔던 중학생 누나와 초등학생 남동생은 순식간에 폐허가 된 도쿄의 거리에서, 우연히 알게 된 싱글마더 마리의 도움을 받아 엄마, 아빠의 곁으로 돌아 가기 위해 갖은 노력을 다한다. 이 작품은, 실제로 30년 이내에 발생할 확률이 70%라고 하는 도쿄 대규모 강진을 상정하여, Production IG에서 연출가로 활동하고 있던 다치바나 마사키가 감독한 리얼한 시뮬레이션 애니메이션이다. 지진 후에 벌어지는 다양한 인간군상과 사랑의 이야기를 감동적으로 그리고 있다. TV를 통해서 총11화가 심야 시간대에 방송되었으며, 2009년 문화청 미디어예술제 애니메이션부문에서 최우수상을 수상했다. 극장판은 TV에서 방송된 것을 95분으로 재편집한 것이다. (2010년 제7회 메가박스 일본영화제)

Occasionally, she ventures into the town situated near the mountain, in search of work opportunities. In gratitude for her work, the townspeople offer her food as a gesture of appreciation. Bincho-tan leads a challenging life, but her joyful and warm demeanor endears her to those around her, leading her to make new friends. As time goes on, one after another heartwarming stories unfold, Bincho-tan finally illuminates her smile like a happy child.

Humanity makes much progress through a combination of science and magic, until a large war breaks out. Many years later, the magical city of Sosarium (constructed on the Moon) sends an agent down to Earth to make sure history does not repeat itself as civilisation starts to rebuild itself. That agent is known as an Angel.
