마리암은 사우디 아라비아의 한 작은 마을 의료센터에서 일하는 젊은 의사다. 충분한 실력을 갖추고도 그녀는 여성이라는 이유로 자신을 인정하지 않으려는 남성 동료들과 환자들에게 시달려야 한다. 더 나은 일자리를 찾아 두바이로 가려 하지만 공항에서 출국을 거부당한다. 꽉 막힌 상황에서 그녀는 의료 센터 앞길의 보수 요청을 계속 거절하던 남성 의원 대신 자신이 보수 공사를 결정하기 위해 지방의회 의원에 출마하기로 한다. 마리암은 여동생들과 함께 기금 마련을 하고 선거 운동을 시작한다. 자매들의 행보는 매번 사호가 원하는 전통적인 여성의 역할 때문에 장애에 부딪히고 마리암의 겁없는 출마는 보수적인 공동체에 하나의 기념비적 도전이 된다. 마리암과 남성 후보들간의 팽팽한 접전이 진행되며 마리암과 가족들의 추진력은 보수적 사회 전체를 한 걸음 앞으로 끌어당긴다.
