제2차 세계대전이 한창이던 1941년, 동유럽의 대부분을 점령한 독일은 러시아 침공을 계획하고 ‘레닌그라드’로 진격한다. 이 소식이 전해지자 ‘레닌그라드’에 상주해 있던 수많은 각국 기자들이 본국으로 돌아가지만 미국 출신의 여기자 ‘케이트’는 이 가운데 실종되어 본국으로 돌아가지 못한 채 ‘레닌그라드’에 홀로 남게 된다. 추위와 배고픔 속에 ‘레닌그라드’를 탈출하려던 그녀는 러시아의 여성 경찰 ‘니나’를 운명처럼 만나게 되고 두 사람은 서로를 의지해 지옥 같은 전장에서 탈출을 시도하는데...
