Vita, an employee of a private spy agency, is handed a case of tapping into and listening to the mysterious life of a new "client". By day, her work on the case seems all the more routine; by night she's involved in a steamy and passionate affair. 쉴리코프는 돈을 벌기에 급급한 러시안 택시운전수이고 리오차는 알콜중독에 빠진 유태인 섹스폰 연주자이다. 쉴리코프는 택시요금을 안내고 도망갔던 리오차를 붙잡아 자기밑에 두고 일을 시킨다. 리오차는 쉴리코프가 시키는데로 일하며 용돈을 얻어 술을 마시면서 그와 동거에 들어간다. 가치관이 판이하게 다른 이 두남자는 서로를 비난하면서도 색다른 우정을 쌓아간다. 거의 폐인이었던 리오차는 다시 음악을 하게 되고, 차츰 유명해지면서 쉴리코프와는 멀어진다. 마침내 리오차는 미국까지 가서 연주활동을 하게 되고, 리오차를 이젠 TV화면을 통해서 볼 수 밖에 없는 쉴리코프는 깊은 외로움에 바진다. 어느날 리오차가 쉴리코프를 다시 찾아오고, 그 둘은 서로가 다르면서도 떨어져서는 살 수 없다는 것을 알게 된다. 결국 둘은 서로를 이해하기 보다는 어느 한쪽을 죽이는 것이 쉽다는 것을 깨닫는다.
