Píše se 13. století. Království českému a markrabství moravskému vládne Přemysl Otakar II. Na zásnuby, které mají usmířit znesvářené rody pánů z Dubé a z Vartemberka, vysílá král svého zástupce v severních Čechách, správce královského hradu Bezdězu, Oldřicha z Chlumu (Karel Roden). Cestou na hrad najdou Oldřich a jeho pomocníci (Jan Dolanský, David Matásek) stopy po loupežné vraždě neznámého kupce. Na vartemberském panství se Oldřich setkává s Ludmilou (Klára Issová), dcerou Markvarta z Vartemberka, kterou zná od jejího dětství. Ludmila se mu svěří, že se nechce vdát za Beneše z Dubé (David Prachař), přestože jejich svatba je podmínkou křehkého míru mezi oběma rody. Během slavnostní hostiny, pořádané na Oldřichovu počest, je zavražděn purkrabí (Miloš Vávra). Podezření padne na loutnistu (Saša Rašilov), jehož snoubenku se purkrabí pokusil zneužít.

She is hoping that her ex-husband, outstanding practical chemical engineer Vik Panc (Eduard Cupák), will help her conduct an experiment to validate her proposed theoretical method of isolating cholesterol from lanolin. The success of Edita's invention is crucial for her career at the Prague Institute of Chemistry. Vik's roommate from his hostel Bréta (Ivan Vyskocil) is thrilled. He will finally meet the mysterious and fascinating Edita about whom he has learned so much from Vik.

Honza and Zuzana are very young husband and wife. They have a little daughter of whom willingly occasionally take care the grandparents and Honza's fifteen-year-old brother Martin. The date of the two young people, however, does not turn out well due to the embarrassment on both sides, and Tóna returns home drowning in the feeling of ridiculousness. On the way, he picks up hitchhiker Kveta (Regina Rázlová) from Prague. Only then, he realizes that the mother with her festive dinner is waiting for him and Janicka at home and thus asks Kveta to substitute for the girl from the ad.
