Near the end of the Chosun Dynasty, a vagabond named Eok-swoi wandered over all of Korea. In the end, Eok-swoi settles in a remote village where he becomes the servant of Magistrate Ahn, a man of influence. Eok-swoi engages in an innocent love with Keum-sun, a maiden servant of Ahn. Though he is over the age of 50, Ahn is still childless. He treats his young second wife badly and finally, he turns his eye to Keum-sun. After being alone night after night, the young wife unintentionally starts an affair with Eok-swoi which Ahn discovers. Out of guilt, Keum-sun had rejected all of Ahn's advances to the end. She runs away with Eok-swoi. Afterwards, Ahn becomes disabled and deeply repents his wrongdoings.
Ae-shim, a waitress, meets Yun-gu and ends up living with him at a rest area restaurant by the industrial highway. However, Yun-gu treats Ae-shim badly. One day, the vagabond Jun-tae shows up in front of Ae-shim. He seduces her and they plan to kill Yun-gu and get his fortune. But Yun-gu catches on to Ae-shim's betrayal and plotting. He still loves her though. Yun-gu decides that the only way he and Ae-shim can be together forever is to die together. Yun-gu pretends to be a pawn in Ae-shim's plans but then leaps off the cliff with her, killing them both. Jun-tae ends up getting caught by the police.
On the first full moon of January, in the town of Ha-pyung, there is a festival going on in the yard of Shin Chi-gyu, the town's biggest landowner. They are playing yut, a game of throwing four short sticks. The winner of the game is Ok-bun's husband, Lee Bang-won. Having no money, Ok-bun and Bang-won had been tenant farmers on Chi-gyu's land. With their winnings, they try to start their own business. Chi-gyu had always been drawn to Ok-bun. When Bang-won leaves, Chi-gyu comes on strong to Ok-bun. Ok-bun waits eagerly for her husband's return but Bang-won has failed in his business and returns a pauper. As their dreams go up in smoke, Ok-bun falls into deep despair.
석우가 정신적 방황을 계속하다 성적 욕구마저 상실하자 아내 인영은 병구를 만나기 시작한다. 인영은 병구와의 관계를 위해 가출까지 불사하지만 병구와의 관계는 불장난처럼 끝나고 만다.
딸 하미가 계속 엄마를 찾자 석우는 인영을 원망하고 아버지를 찾아가 털어 놓지만 아버지는 며느리의 가출을 이해한다고 말한다. 위로를 받고 싶었던 석우는 아버지의 말에 자극을 받아 인영을 이해하고 다시 받아들이게 된다.

Go-na takes her daughter, Min-hi, and goes to Seoul where she gets a job as a hostess. One day, Mun Byung-kil proposes to Go-na. Troubled by her situation, Go-na turns him down. But Go-na is touched by his sincerity and marries him. The three live happily as a family but then Kye-nam shows up and demands his daughter Min-hi. However, Ky0e-nam goes away when he realizes which is real happiness of his daughter.
불우했던 영자는 진실한 남자를 만나 결혼했으나 남편이 교통사고로 죽는다. 영자는 딸에게 온갖 희망을 걸고 억척스럽게 살아간다. 그런 영자에게 옛날 사랑했던 남자가 나타난다. 그는 영자를 못잊어 결혼을 하지 않았다. 영자의 딱한 처지를 안 그는 영자의 주위를 배회하지만 영자는 거절한다. 그러는 사이 영자는 딸을 시가에 빼앗기고 비관속에서 죽음을 생각하나 그녀의 첫사랑은 그녀를 살려낸다. 드디어 그들은 결혼을 하게 되고 신혼여행 대신에 시가에 있는 자식을 찾으러 고속도로를 달린다.
벚꽃이 피고 또 새봄은 왔건만 춘삼은 자신을 성례시켜주기로 한 봉필영감 집에서 3년째 머슴살이 중이다. 점순의 키가 크지 않을 것이라 여겨 성실한 춘삼을 몇 년 더 머슴으로 부려먹을 요량인 봉필영감은 이미 마을의 몽태를 비롯해 여러 장정을 머슴으로 써먹다 그들이 제 풀에 지쳐 달아나게 한 전력이 있다. 춘삼은 점순의 키가 안자랄까봐 무거운 물동이도 지지 못하게 하며 그녀가 자라기만을 기다리지만, 점순은 키만 크면 어른이냐며, 밤낮 우직하게 일만 하는 춘삼을 오히려 원망한다. 한편 봉필영감에게는 점순이 못지 않게 그녀를 구실삼아 실컷 머슴을 부릴 수 있었던 큰 딸이 있었는데, 머슴 중 한 남자와 함께 도망가 버린 지 오래됐다. 답답한 춘삼은 구장어른을 찾아가 자신이 성례를 치를 수 있게 도와달라고 부탁하고, 춘삼이 딱해 보인 구장어른은 자신이 시키는 대로만 하라며, 봉필 영감이 젊은 시절 그의 장인에게 써먹었던 방법을 넌지시 일러준다. 어느 날, 봉필영감으로부터 도망쳤던 점순의 언니 부부가 커다란 트럭을 타고 돌아오고, 봉필영감은 그들이 크게 성공한 줄 알며 마을 사람들에게 으스댄다. 봉필영감은 장인의 보약까지 해온 옛 머슴을 드디어 사위로 인정하고, 그가 부탁한 쌀 20가마니를 내어주지만, 곧 그가 자기 딸까지 속여가며 사기를 친 것임이 드러난다. 봉필영감은 춘삼에게 돼지를 팔아오라고 읍내로 보내놓고, 몽태에게 쌀 20가마니를 찾아오면 점순을 준다고 공약한다. 이를 듣고 점순이 울자 춘삼은 구장이 일러준 대로, 그 옛날 봉필영감이 써먹었던 방식대로, 장인의 그곳을 움켜잡고 협박을 해서 결혼 승낙을 받아내고 만다.
